May 8Flash Camp Orlando Speaker Interview: Jason Madsen

Early bird registration has been extended until May 15th, so sign up and save now!

On May 29th, Jason Madsen will be speaking at Flash Camp Orlando on Making The Jump To Flex.  We recently had a discussion with Jason about his topic and Flash Camp Orlando:

AP: Give us the elevator pitch about what we’ll get from your presentation:

JM: I think there is a large community of ActionScript / Flash developers who know about Flex.  They are aware it is around, and somewhat aware of what it is / does.  I have run into a lot of those developers who, for whatever reason still haven't dove in to really take advantage of what the framework has to offer.  The idea behind my presentation is to help nudge those types of developers into making the jump.  I don't know of too many developers who have taken the time to get into Flex that regret it.  So my session is an overview of the technology, and a rapid "getting started" session.

AP: Which session, other than yours, are you looking forward to seeing, and why?

JM: I am most looking forward to seeing David Tucker's session "Working with Data in AIR".  I have been digging AIR since APOLLO.  I think that the encrypted database support of AIR 1.5 opens up quite a few possibilities.

AP: Will you be introducing anything new in your session?

JM: For developers just starting out in Flex, there will most likely be some new information.  But generally speaking this will be a beginners approach to Flex

AP: What are you most excited about for Flash Camp Orlando?

JM: I'm mostly excited to meet up with developers here in the area.  Working at the University can be like living in a bubble sometimes.  It'll be nice to see who is doing what in the community.  It's also not everyday that this type of event comes to central Florida.  It'll be nice to have the level of speakers that the camp will have.

AP: In your opinion, why should people new to RIA applications attend?  Experienced in RIA applications?

JM: I think if you are new to RIA applications there are a lot of options out there.  It is really helpful to see how people are approaching the myriad of technologies that can be involved.  So for the newer people, I think that it is important to get out there and see what people are doing.  For experienced developers it is really easy to fall into the "comfortable trap" where you get stuck approaching problems with the same mind set.  This technology changes so quickly.  A camp like this can be a great way to refresh your perspective.
